Joby “Applies for Aircraft Certification in Australia”
Joby Aviation announced this week it has formally applied for its eVTOL Aircraft to be certified for use in Australia, reports Business Wire. The application to Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for the validation of an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) type certification builds on a bi-lateral agreement between the U.S regulator and CASA and lays the groundwork for the introduction of electric air taxis in Australia.
Joby’s eVTOL is designed to carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph, offering high-speed mobility, zero operating emissions, and with a fraction of the noise produced by helicopters.
JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby, enthused, “We’re incredibly excited about the potential for air taxis to offer new and more sustainable ways to travel around Australia’s global cities.”
He continued, “With commercial powered-lift operations already considered in CASA’s regulatory frameworks, we’re pleased to be working with Australian authorities using a regulatory path to market that is actively being pursued by numerous countries around the world.”

The report explains, “Type certification is a multi-year process which sees a company undertake rigorous testing and documentation across each aircraft system to prove the aircraft meets safety standards and is ready for commercial operations.
“Joby was the first electric air taxi developer to have its FAA certification basis published in the U.S. Federal Register, and was also the first company to complete the first, second and third of five stages of the Federal Aviation Administration type certification process required for commercial service.”
Joby has also applied to have its FAA type certificate, once received, validated by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) and the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Australian vertiport developer, Skyportz, has welcomed the news. Its Founder and CEO, Clem Newton-Brown, commented, “In Australia there is strong policy support for the development of Advanced Air Mobility from our safety regulator, CASA, our Federal and State Governments. What we have been missing is a serious commitment from a leading electric air taxi operator to enter our market via local certification. This announcement by Joby is very exciting for the emerging local ecosystem.”
Skyportz aims to break the nexus between aviation and airports and enable commercial and industrial property developers to host vertiports. Over 400 property sites have expressed an interest in hosting them in Australia.

Newton-Brown continued, “With this announcement today, we could see Joby aircraft commence operations in Australia from our planned Skyportz sites in the foreseeable future.”
CASA recently released vertiport guidelines, signalling a commitment to facilitate Advanced Air Mobility in Australia. These envisage that new vertiports will exclude helicopters to assist with developing community support for Advanced Air Mobility.
