Vertical Flight Society Announces 8th Advanced Air Mobility Infrastructure Workshop

The Vertical Flight Society (VFS) is set to host its 8th Workshop on Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Infrastructure on Sept. 17–18, 2024. This pivotal event, held at the US Navy Memorial Visitor Center in Washington, DC, aims to address the critical need for infrastructure development to support the burgeoning electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft industry.

Workshop Focus: eVTOL Vertiport Development

The workshop will delve into the intricacies of developing infrastructure to support eVTOL aircraft, aligning with the ongoing efforts of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and industry partners to establish eVTOL vertiports.

Day One Highlights: FAA Updates and Weather Challenges

The first day of the workshop will feature updates on the FAA’s Vertiport Engineering Brief No. 105 and vertiport symbology research. Additionally, a crucial discussion led by NASA researchers, FAA representatives, and industry experts will address the unique weather challenges associated with vertiport operations. The day will conclude with a focus on developing local AAM knowledge and education.

Day Two Highlights: Certification, CNS, and OEM Roundtable

The second day will commence with an outbrief of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Certification Task Force. Subsequent sessions will explore AAM communications/navigation/surveillance (CNS) and the implementation of a safety management system (SMS) in AAM infrastructure operations. The workshop will culminate in a roundtable discussion with leading eVTOL original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), offering insights into their infrastructure needs and expectations.

VFS: A Leader in AAM Infrastructure Development

As with previous workshops, VFS is committed to providing an open forum for industry stakeholders, subject matter experts, and government representatives to exchange ideas and address the latest advancements and challenges in AAM and vertical flight infrastructure. VFS has been actively driving consensus-based solutions since 2019 through these workshops, playing a pivotal role in informing and guiding both industry and government initiatives.

Who Should Attend

The workshop welcomes a diverse range of participants, including eVTOL manufacturers, federal and state department of transportation (DOT) officials, FAA officials, NASA researchers, municipality leaders, individuals working in or with the Department of Defense (DoD), infrastructure designers, architecture and engineering firms, aviation insurance companies, Part 135 commuter or on-demand operations certificate holders, building and fire code professionals, land-use professionals, and anyone else interested in the future of AAM infrastructure.

Parting Thoughts

The 8th AAM Infrastructure Workshop hosted by the Vertical Flight Society represents a pivotal moment in the advancement of eVTOL infrastructure. As the industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, collaborative efforts like this are essential to ensure the safe, efficient, and sustainable integration of eVTOL aircraft into our airspace. By bringing together key stakeholders from across the spectrum, this workshop promises to foster meaningful dialogue, drive innovation, and shape the future of vertical flight.
