EHang Participates in EU satellite-based augmentation systems

EHang will participate in an EU-funded project, the satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) adoption in multicopter VTOL aircraft (SAMVA) to deploy European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) on eVTOL aircraft operations across the continent.

Under an initiative of the European Union Space Programme (EUSPA), SAMVA focusses on implementing EGNOS satellite-based operations on eVTOLs to enhance advanced air mobility services and integration with the U‑Space airspace being developed to manage unmanned aerial systems.

The project consortium includes Aeroports de Catalunya, EHang, Pildo Labs, the Airports Regional Council, Thales-Alenia Space, and Eliance.

For the SAMVA project, Aeroports de Catalunya and EHang plan to establish an Autonomous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) operational centre at Lleida-Alguaire airport to conduct EH216 flight demonstrations with EGNOS deployment.

This will showcase how EGNOS can support and enhance unmanned aircraft system traffic management tasks and AAV urban operations. Participation in SAMVA will enable EHang to explore and expand AAV application in airport environments.

EHang Europe and Latin America chief operating officer Victoria Jing Xiang commented: “The SAMVA project will unleash EGNOS capabilities aboard EHang’s EH216 AAV to provide precise navigation guidance and support U‑Space airspace integration.

“Our participation in this project reflects the meaningful progress we’ve made overseas with our strong industry-leading technologies as our global footprint expands. With that, EHang will continue to move further forward in the innovative development of safe and sustainable Advanced Air Mobility with global partners.”

EGNOS provides an augmentation signal to the Global Positioning System (GPS) Standard Positioning Service (SPS), providing correction data and integrity information for improving positioning and navigation services over Europe.

EUSPA is the user-oriented operational European Union Agency for the Space Programme. The agency’s core mission is to implement the EU Space Programme, and to provide reliable, safe and secure space-related services, maximizing their socio-economic benefits for European society and business.

EUSPA’s goal is to provide long-term, state-of-the-art safe and secure Galileo and EGNOS positioning, navigation, and timing services and cost-effective satellite communications services for GOVSATCOM, whilst ensuring service continuity and robustness. It also aims to communicate, promote, and develop the market for data, information and services offered by Galileo, EGNOS, Copernicus and GOVSATCOM.

Earlier this month, EHang signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hong Kong-based Aircraft Engineering Company HAECO Group to explore advanced air mobility.

Last month, EHang Holdings EH216 AAV performed successful flight demonstrations in Spain under the European Union (EU) Air Mobility Urban – Large Experimental Demonstration (AMU-LED) project.
