Joby Aviation: “The Sound of Silence”

Joby has released a new acoustic study showing the ‘sound difference’ between its eVTOL when compared with a helicopter.

As the company is soon to embark on an exciting 2026, Founder and CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, has emphasised from the very beginning, the importance of an aircraft’s ‘sound of silence’ and lack of noise pollution, as being an important selling point for electric air taxis. His description of “the rustling of leaves” has become well-known.

Recent acoustic data, once more, shows just how quiet Joby’s eVTOL is. This research builds on NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility National Campaign, when the company demonstrated its aircraft’s revolutionary low noise performance in controlled conditions back in 2022.

Austin Thai, Joby’s Acoustics Senior Engineer, posted a blog last Thursday (August 28th) entitled ‘From city parks to busy streets: How Joby’s electric air taxi blends into urban soundscapes.’

The new and impressive study includes:-

: Delivering revolutionary low-noise footprint - Over an entire roundtrip flight between the locations modelled, noise from the Joby aircraft was greater than the ambient noise for only 0.17 sq. miles. When the aircraft is cruising, this drops to 0.004 sq. miles. To put this in perspective, noise from a traditional helicopter on the same route was above ambient conditions for 45 sq. miles, potentially disrupting thousands of people.

: Reducing noise at critical community areas - Even near schools, universities and parks, the modelling showed operations at or below background noise levels. Helicopters, by comparison, remain louder than background noise for nearly a minute during flight in some locations.

Meanwhile, the acquisition of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger business has now been signed, sealed and delivered.

A company press release says, “The acquisition brings an immediate operational footprint to Joby in key markets and a playbook that will lay the foundation for the introduction of our eVTOL aircraft into commercial air taxi service.”
