EHang: “Celebrities For FREE eVTOL Marketing”
It is becoming obvious. The eVTOL Industry will only need to carry out initial minimal marketing for their aircraft as celebrities will do it for them and, no doubt, for FREE.
Take EHang for example.
This week the company approached a Youtube star called IShowSpeed. For those of us who are 40 somethings, this U.S‑born, 20 year-old social media superstar, has over 100 million global followers… yes, 100 million!
After creating his channel in 2016 to post gaming content, five years later, he rose to prominence partly due to his provocative behaviour and statements (says Google).
Then he attracted a strange illness called a cluster headache where he told his followers “I can’t sleep, I can’t eat, I can’t do anything right now.” This gave him further notoriety followed by lots of social media sympathy.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, IShowSpeed or Speed to his fans is alleged to be worth over USD10 million gained from ad revenue, sponsorship deals, merchandise sales and even music releases. (His father Darren Watkins is a musician).

From Serene to Manic
So, Speed just happened to be in Asia. EHang found out and asked him to be one of the early public members to fly in an EH216‑S autonomous eVTOL. What great content for Speed’s social media followers. What great FREE publicity for EHang. A case of quid pro quo.
His reaction to the flight sums up his drama queen nature. From serene when on terra firma to manic behaviour while in the air. He screams, “I am the first person to drive a flying car!” Is this meant to be comical or does he actually believe this? Ask the technicians who were controlling the autonomous craft below.
EHang tweeted, “BIG welcome to @ishowspeedsui for his first EH216‑S flight! He was amazed by the safety and excitement of the journey. We’re thrilled to have him experience the future of urban air mobility!”
The company is not the only one to go down the superstar route. Personal flying vehicle company, Jetson, has attracted the support of pop star and music producer Will-i-am. He is also a major investor and has been promised one of the first craft to come off the assembly line, after successfully completing a flying training course.
While Will-i-am has fewer social media followers than Speed, 30+ million is still a fair amount of people.
