Elroy Air Expands Chaparral Drone Delivery Options Under U.S. Army Contract
Elroy Air has developed three unattended delivery modes for its Chaparral autonomous cargo aircraft under a U.S. Army contract. The modes allow the aircraft to release payloads without personnel or ground infrastructure at the receiving site. Elroy Air, based in the San Francisco area with facilities in Byron, California, develops autonomous heavy-cargo VTOL systems for defense, rapid response, and commercial logistics applications.
The three options are precision airdrop from a hover, precision airdrop during forward flight, and ground delivery after landing. In a demonstration at the company’s Byron, California facility on July 15, 2026, Chaparral completed two releases in a single flight: a 68-pound payload from a close-in hover and a 70-pound payload from 65 feet while flying forward. Both drops were executed from pre-programmed coordinates with no operator input during the sequence. The company also demonstrated unattended ground delivery, in which the aircraft released its payload after landing.
Chaparral is a vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) aircraft designed to operate without runways or fixed ground support. It uses swappable cargo pods so a single airframe can support different mission types without reconfiguration. The unattended delivery modes are intended for situations where landing is impractical or would expose a position, including contested environments, disaster response, maritime operations, and austere terrain
.Aerial resupply remains a key requirement for distributed military operations. A runway-independent platform that can deliver cargo without putting aircrews or ground personnel at risk addresses part of the contested logistics challenge. According to Elroy Air, one aircraft can now resupply multiple locations in a single sortie under the new modes.
Production Chaparral aircraft will be manufactured by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions under an existing U.S. manufacturing partnership. On July 20, 2026, Kratos announced that it will produce the aircraft at its expanding facility in Sacramento, California.
