South Korea: Coastal City Seosan to Commercialise Drone Delivery For Island Residents
Seosan, a South Korean Coastal City comprised of many small islands, is to commercialise drone delivery for its residents, reports ajudaily.com. The City in the western region of South Korea showcased a drone carrying dried seafood at a recent demonstration event attended by those from a State aviation safety technology institute and others specialising in drone technologies.
A spokesperson for Seosan said, “A hybrid multicopter powered by hydrogen and electric batteries was trialled in front of officials from the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology, drone solution provider Airon, and Bohemianos, a mobile delivery platform developer.” Beginning in September, the City is to commercialise a mobile app-based drone delivery service from Jungri Port to Gopa Island.
The City also showcased an unmanned aircraft delivering medical supplies such as medicines for infectious diseases. Seosan says it will cooperate with a local medical centre to launch a drone-based healthcare delivery service for island residents later this year.

Drone Delivery Hub in Tancheon Water Park
Meanwhile, the operator of South Korea’s largest convenience store chain, CU, is presently delivering food and medical items by drone to two Tancheon water parks in Seongnam, a southeastern satellite city of Seoul. Anyone can receive products such as snacks and over-the-counter drugs by using a QR code.
Starting in September, the convenience store operator will also adopt the delivery service at a campsite in Taean County some 68 miles southwest of Seoul. Taean was selected as South Korea’s regulation-free zone for drones in 2021. Developers can freely use the tourist town as a testbed for newly developed unmanned craft.
For example, in December 2021, smart farm drones that can analyse crops’ temperature and humidity were showcased in Chuncheon some 47 miles northeast of Seoul.
