UK Funds Project SEAN for Electric Aircraft Demonstrations in Scotland’s Highlands and Islands

A con­sor­tium led by Bris­tow Heli­copters has launched Project SEAN, the Scot­tish Elec­tric Avi­a­tion Net­work, after secur­ing £1.5 mil­lion in fund­ing from the UK Depart­ment for Trans­port. The ini­tia­tive will con­duct demon­stra­tion flights of elec­tric air­craft across Scotland’s High­lands and Islands begin­ning in 2027.

The project aims to assess how elec­tric air­craft can improve region­al con­nec­tiv­i­ty, sup­port sus­tain­able air ser­vices, and bet­ter serve remote com­mu­ni­ties. Part­ners include air­craft man­u­fac­tur­er BETA Tech­nolo­gies, Elec­tric Avi­a­tion Maven, High­lands and Islands Air­ports Lim­it­ed (HIAL), High­lands and Islands Trans­port Part­ner­ship (HITRANS), and Sky­ports Infra­struc­ture.

A planned three-month flight pro­gram will use BETA Tech­nolo­gies’ all-elec­tric ALIA CTOL (CX300) air­craft. Oper­a­tions will be based at a hub at Inver­ness Air­port and extend to select­ed region­al air­ports, includ­ing Wick John O’Groats Air­port. The flights will cov­er pas­sen­ger, car­go, and med­ical ser­vice routes to col­lect oper­a­tional data on air­craft per­for­mance, charg­ing infra­struc­ture, and air­port readi­ness for future elec­tric oper­a­tions.

Project SEAN builds on expe­ri­ence from ear­li­er zero-emis­sion avi­a­tion ini­tia­tives in Europe and the Unit­ed King­dom. The con­sor­tium intends to gen­er­ate prac­ti­cal insights and evi­dence-based rec­om­men­da­tions that could sup­port even­tu­al com­mer­cial deploy­ment of elec­tric air­craft while con­tribut­ing to decar­boniza­tion goals.

Simon Meakins, Project SEAN con­sor­tium lead for Bris­tow, said the fund­ing allows the group to move from plan­ning into real-world demon­stra­tion flights. “We can now move from plan­ning to exe­cut­ing real-world demon­stra­tion flights and gen­er­at­ing prac­ti­cal insights that will help inform the future of elec­tric avi­a­tion in Scot­land and beyond,” he stat­ed.

Bris­tow Group is a glob­al provider of avi­a­tion ser­vices, pri­mar­i­ly sup­port­ing off­shore ener­gy com­pa­nies and gov­ern­ment enti­ties, with oper­a­tions in mul­ti­ple coun­tries includ­ing the Unit­ed King­dom.

The project rep­re­sents one of sev­er­al efforts under­way to test elec­tric air­craft in region­al net­works where short­er routes and low­er pas­sen­ger vol­umes may suit emerg­ing zero-emis­sion tech­nolo­gies. Fur­ther details on exact flight sched­ules and spe­cif­ic routes are expect­ed as prepa­ra­tions advance toward the 2027 demon­stra­tion peri­od.
