UK Funds Project SEAN for Electric Aircraft Demonstrations in Scotland’s Highlands and Islands
A consortium led by Bristow Helicopters has launched Project SEAN, the Scottish Electric Aviation Network, after securing £1.5 million in funding from the UK Department for Transport. The initiative will conduct demonstration flights of electric aircraft across Scotland’s Highlands and Islands beginning in 2027.
The project aims to assess how electric aircraft can improve regional connectivity, support sustainable air services, and better serve remote communities. Partners include aircraft manufacturer BETA Technologies, Electric Aviation Maven, Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS), and Skyports Infrastructure.
A planned three-month flight program will use BETA Technologies’ all-electric ALIA CTOL (CX300) aircraft. Operations will be based at a hub at Inverness Airport and extend to selected regional airports, including Wick John O’Groats Airport. The flights will cover passenger, cargo, and medical service routes to collect operational data on aircraft performance, charging infrastructure, and airport readiness for future electric operations.
Project SEAN builds on experience from earlier zero-emission aviation initiatives in Europe and the United Kingdom. The consortium intends to generate practical insights and evidence-based recommendations that could support eventual commercial deployment of electric aircraft while contributing to decarbonization goals.
Simon Meakins, Project SEAN consortium lead for Bristow, said the funding allows the group to move from planning into real-world demonstration flights. “We can now move from planning to executing real-world demonstration flights and generating practical insights that will help inform the future of electric aviation in Scotland and beyond,” he stated.

The project represents one of several efforts underway to test electric aircraft in regional networks where shorter routes and lower passenger volumes may suit emerging zero-emission technologies. Further details on exact flight schedules and specific routes are expected as preparations advance toward the 2027 demonstration period.
