Watch Video: “Wing Drone Delivery Now Active in Charlotte, North Carolina”
Wing continues to expand its drone delivery service across America with the latest covering an area of Charlotte City, North Carolina.
Push to one side the regular public complaints of Wing’s drones sounding like a swarm of whiny mosquitoes or the buzz of flies, the company keeps going, believing that people will get used to this noise, just as they did when helicopters first flew in the skies.
The difference being these drones can hover less than 30 ft above homes located in suburbs and often can be delivering to a small area up to 80 or more times a day.
Some call it progress, focusing on the positives like the rapid service of delivering food, often within 15 minutes of an internet order, bringing a new meaning to the phrase ‘convenience food’.
Why should people have to leave their homes and drive through potential traffic congestion to a local supermarket, when drones can do it all for you? Speed and convenience are the two buzz words for this growing industry, yet noise will always remain an inconvenient truth.
Leaving that aside, Wing’s partnership with DoorDash (a company that connects local consumers and restaurants with delivery) continues to grow and Charlotte is their latest trial venture.
If you live within four miles of the Arboretum Shopping Centre in the south of the city, the public can now have lunch delivered via a drone. Items can include local delicacies like Curry Junction, Joa Korean food, Matcha Cafe Maiko and Panera’s much loved mac & cheese, which can be delivered to a Charlotte doorstep by air for as little as USD1 dollar (a special limited offer). Meanwhile, there is a fleet of 18 drones at the ready, located next to the Centre.
This new service is the latest step in DoorDash and Wing’s collaboration, which first launched in Australia back in 2022 and has since touched down in various parts of Virginia and Texas.
Harrison Shih, Head of Product at DoorDash Labs, the company’s robotics and automation division, enthused, “This isn’t just about cool tech — it’s about the experience. There’s something special about watching your Panera sandwich arrive from the sky.”

DoorDash Labs mission is to make all things autonomous, from drones to sidewalk bots, to create the ultimate delivery network that’s fast, flexible and futuristic.
North Carolina is steeped in pioneering aviation history, most notably brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright inventing and then flying the first successful airplane, the Flyer, from atop of Kill Devil Hill in Kitty Hawk, NC in December, 1903. This revolutionary innovation is a staple in the state’s rich history and the event is commemorated on the North Carolina license plates by the words ‘First in Flight.’ Now Charlotte is continuing this tradition via high-tech drone delivery.
Adam Woodworth, Wing CEO, commented, “Charlotte is a city that embraces technology solutions to big transportation challenges. We’re incredibly excited to launch here and grateful for the warm welcome.”
But it’s not just restaurant food embracing the drone treatment. Charlotte residents can also tap into DashMart by Drone, a special version of DoorDash’s digital convenience store.
