European Medical Drone signs purchase agreement with Dufour Aerospace for 11 Aero2 tilt-wing aircraft

European Medical Drone, a Swedish drone operator connecting hospitals by means of drone transportation, and Dufour Aerospace yesterday signed a development cooperation and purchase agreement for 11 Aero2 uncrewed tilt-wing aircraft.

The agreement includes the delivery of one Aero2 X2.3 prototype aircraft in 2024 and 10 serial Aero2 aircraft with delivery starting in 2026. Swedish helicopter vendor and partner of Dufour Aerospace Savback Helicopters is assisting this transaction.

“Dufour’s Aero2 is exactly what we are looking for, and at this stage, we do not see another product offering the same features close to market entry,” said Martin Braaen, Founder of European Medical Drone.

“Our mission is to facilitate sharing of vital resources among hospitals. Our system allows hospitals to request and receive essential supplies such as blood, medicines, and medical equipment.

“As we have a focus on connecting hospitals which are several hundred kilometres apart, we need long-range, heavy-lift, uncrewed aircraft with a lot of redundancy for safety.”

Thomas Pfammatter, CEO of Dufour Aerospace added: “Connecting hospitals makes sense, and this contract confirms that our specifications meet not only use cases overseas, but also in Europe.”

Michael Savbäck, founder and CEO of Savback Helicopters concluded: “Savback Helicopters shows our commitment to advancing the future of medical logistics through cutting-edge technologies.

“We look forward to supporting European Medical Drone’s mission to create a robust medical logistics network to hospitals in Scandinavia. The Dufour Aero2’s ability to seamlessly transition between roles and missions makes it a standout choice for a wide range of applications.”

The three companies will draft the necessary concepts of operations, submit the necessary documentation to the authorities, and carry out trial operations to identify both the potential and limitations of operations and implement use case specific requirements into the aircraft.

Headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, European Medical Drone is a team comprising drone enthusiasts and aviation experts which blends rich piloting backgrounds with cutting-edge drone technology.

Earlier this month, Air Energy was selected as a supplier for the smart battery packs for the hybrid-electric propulsion system of the Dufour Aerospace uncrewed tilt-wing aircraft Aero2. Air Energy will design the battery housing, the mechanical and electrical connection of the battery packs and the battery management system for the Aero2.
