Pipistrel hosts first maintenance course on electric aircraft and plans to organise new date next month
Pipistrel has obtained the right to train Part-66 licenced aircraft mechanics on how to maintain its Velis Electro — currently the world’s only certified all-electric aircraft — and is planning to host a new course next month.
The Slovenian-based company held its first five-day workshop in December 2020 and carried out a second course last week. With significant interest from individuals and other firms across the industry, Pipistrel is now set to organise more events in future. It is hoped a workshop can take place every month.
Announcing the course on its website, it said: “Organising a seminar of this kind is a great achievement and honour for Pipistrel. The road to this point was very long and required cooperation of many individuals and institutions. At this point, Pipistrel would like to thank the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the Slovenian Civil Aviation Agency for their help and support.
“We would also like to thank the entire teams of Pipistrel d.o.o., which is the holder of the authorisation, and Pipistrel Vertical Solution, which participated in the entire phase of preparation of manual and training program, for their diligent internal cooperation.”
Pipistrel achieved type certification for its battery-powered Velis Electro from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in June 2020, after successfully demonstrating the aircraft achieves the highest levels of safety. It is the culmination of years of intensive research and several successful award-winning electric aircraft models, which it has been developing since 2007.
Conceived as a fundamental part of the Velis Training System, the Velis Electro is designed to be simple to operate and maintain, without compromising safety. Employing Pipistrel’s type certified electric engine, the Velis Electro delivers power instantly and without hesitation – using a simplified user interface in a cockpit that maintains the same look-and-feel of its conventionally powered siblings.
