Amazon Plans Major Expansion of Prime Air Drone Delivery in 2026

Ama­zon plans to expand its Prime Air drone deliv­ery ser­vice to near­ly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026, rep­re­sent­ing a sig­nif­i­cant increase from its cur­rent foot­print.

The ser­vice cur­rent­ly oper­ates from 11 loca­tions across 10 US met­ro­pol­i­tan areas, cov­er­ing parts of Ari­zona, Flori­da, Kansas, Louisiana, Michi­gan, Nebras­ka and Texas. Ama­zon says it plans to launch in the Chica­go, Syra­cuse, Cleve­land, Atlanta and Boise met­ro­pol­i­tan areas in the near term, with addi­tion­al com­mu­ni­ties expect­ed to fol­low lat­er this year.

Prime Air allows cus­tomers in eli­gi­ble areas to order qual­i­fy­ing prod­ucts for deliv­ery by drone, with Ama­zon say­ing deliv­er­ies can arrive in as lit­tle as 30 min­utes. The ser­vice cov­ers items weigh­ing up to five pounds that can fit inside a large shoe­box, includ­ing gro­ceries, elec­tron­ics, cos­met­ics, med­ica­tions and house­hold prod­ucts.

Ama­zon said it has com­plet­ed hun­dreds of thou­sands of drone deliv­er­ies dur­ing 2026 so far. Most cur­rent orders report­ed­ly arrive in around an hour, despite the ser­vice being capa­ble of faster deliv­ery times.

The expan­sion is being sup­port­ed by Ama­zon’s MK30 drone, which the com­pa­ny describes as hav­ing twice the range and half the noise of its pre­vi­ous deliv­ery drone. The air­craft uses onboard cam­eras and sen­sors for nav­i­ga­tion, obsta­cle detec­tion and deliv­ery.

Safe­ty and reg­u­la­to­ry over­sight remain cen­tral to the roll­out. Prime Air oper­ates under FAA Part 135 cer­ti­fi­ca­tion, the reg­u­la­to­ry frame­work used for com­mer­cial air car­ri­ers. Ama­zon’s drones also use an autonomous Detect-and-Avoid sys­tem intend­ed to mon­i­tor sur­round­ing air­space and respond to poten­tial haz­ards with­out rely­ing on a remote pilot for every deci­sion.

The com­pa­ny has also expand­ed Prime Air inter­na­tion­al­ly, launch­ing the ser­vice in Dar­ling­ton, Eng­land, ear­li­er this year. That expan­sion marked its first deploy­ment out­side the US.
