ARIDGE and UAE Authorities Plan Flying Car Testing Sandbox

Chi­nese fly­ing car devel­op­er ARIDGE has signed an agree­ment with the Emi­rate of Ras Al Khaimah to estab­lish an advanced air mobil­i­ty (AAM) reg­u­la­to­ry sand­box in the Unit­ed Arab Emi­rates, along­side plans for a demon­stra­tion route link­ing Ras Al Khaimah with Abu Dhabi.

The agree­ment was signed with Ras Al Khaimah author­i­ties under the over­sight of the UAE Gen­er­al Civ­il Avi­a­tion Author­i­ty (GCAA). Accord­ing to ARIDGE, the sand­box will pro­vide a con­trolled envi­ron­ment for flight val­i­da­tion, oper­a­tional test­ing and reg­u­la­to­ry devel­op­ment for per­son­al low-alti­tude flight.

The pro­gramme will be led by the Ras Al Khaimah Trans­port Author­i­ty (RAKTA). ARIDGE plans to con­duct flight tests in desert con­di­tions and assess air­craft per­for­mance across dif­fer­ent oper­a­tional sce­nar­ios. The com­pa­ny will also work with author­i­ties and indus­try part­ners to devel­op oper­at­ing pro­ce­dures with­in con­trolled air­space.

The pro­posed Abu Dhabi–Ras Al Khaimah demon­stra­tion route is intend­ed to exam­ine the require­ments for future inter-emi­rate AAM ser­vices. Areas under con­sid­er­a­tion include flight plan­ning, air­space coor­di­na­tion, ground sup­port, pas­sen­ger han­dling, air­craft turn­around and safe­ty man­age­ment.

ARIDGE said the com­bi­na­tion of air­craft test­ing, reg­u­la­to­ry engage­ment and route-based oper­a­tions will allow it to devel­op an oper­at­ing frame­work for poten­tial com­mer­cial ser­vices in the UAE.

The com­pa­ny also recent­ly demon­strat­ed its Land Air­craft Car­ri­er mod­u­lar fly­ing car dur­ing an event at Emi­rates Palace in Abu Dhabi. The sys­tem com­bines a ground vehi­cle with a detach­able air mod­ule and is designed for short-range per­son­al flight appli­ca­tions.

ARIDGE said the air mod­ule uses redun­dant propul­sion, pow­er, com­mu­ni­ca­tions and flight-con­trol sys­tems, while its flight-con­trol archi­tec­ture allows pilots to over­ride autonomous func­tions.

The UAE pro­gramme forms part of ARIDGE’s broad­er inter­na­tion­al expan­sion strat­e­gy. The com­pa­ny said expe­ri­ence gained through the reg­u­la­to­ry sand­box and demon­stra­tion route will be used to inform the devel­op­ment of localised AAM oper­a­tions in the UAE and oth­er inter­na­tion­al mar­kets.
