L2 Aviation And Gotonomi Partner To Extend UAV Connectivity

L2 Avi­a­tion and UK-based Gotono­mi have formed a part­ner­ship aimed at extend­ing reli­able com­mu­ni­ca­tions for uncrewed aer­i­al vehi­cles (UAVs) and advanced air mobil­i­ty (AAM) air­craft oper­at­ing beyond the reach of ter­res­tri­al net­works.

The col­lab­o­ra­tion com­bines L2 Aviation’s air­craft inte­gra­tion and cer­ti­fi­ca­tion capa­bil­i­ties with Gotonomi’s com­pact satel­lite com­mu­ni­ca­tions tech­nol­o­gy. The com­pa­nies said the work will ini­tial­ly focus on North Amer­i­can oper­a­tors and appli­ca­tions where cel­lu­lar and Wi-Fi con­nec­tiv­i­ty may be lim­it­ed or unavail­able.

The planned solu­tions will use Gotonomi’s light­weight com­mu­ni­ca­tions sys­tems along­side Viasat’s Velaris satel­lite com­mu­ni­ca­tions ecosys­tem, which is designed for UAV and AAM oper­a­tions. L2 Avi­a­tion joined the Velaris ecosys­tem through Galaxy 1 Com­mu­ni­ca­tions in May 2026.

Under the part­ner­ship, L2 will pro­vide engi­neer­ing, instal­la­tion, inte­gra­tion and cer­ti­fi­ca­tion ser­vices to incor­po­rate the com­mu­ni­ca­tions equip­ment into air­craft and oper­a­tional plat­forms. The sys­tems are intend­ed to sup­port com­mand and con­trol, teleme­try, oper­a­tional infor­ma­tion and oth­er mis­sion-crit­i­cal data.

The com­pa­nies see par­tic­u­lar poten­tial in sec­tors such as ener­gy and infra­struc­ture, where UAVs are increas­ing­ly used to inspect assets spread across large or remote areas. Main­tain­ing con­nec­tiv­i­ty in these envi­ron­ments could also sup­port the expan­sion of Beyond Visu­al Line of Sight (BVLOS) oper­a­tions, although such oper­a­tions remain sub­ject to applic­a­ble reg­u­la­to­ry and oper­a­tional require­ments.

“Ener­gy and infra­struc­ture oper­a­tors increas­ing­ly need air­craft that can remain con­nect­ed well beyond the reach of tra­di­tion­al com­mu­ni­ca­tions net­works,” said Matthew Hill, Gen­er­al Man­ag­er at Gotono­mi. “Com­bin­ing Gotonomi’s com­pact com­mu­ni­ca­tions tech­nol­o­gy with L2 Aviation’s inte­gra­tion and cer­ti­fi­ca­tion expe­ri­ence cre­ates a com­pelling path­way for oper­a­tors look­ing to scale UAV mis­sions into more demand­ing envi­ron­ments.”

L2 said the col­lab­o­ra­tion is intend­ed to pro­vide a route from sys­tem design and air­craft inte­gra­tion through cer­ti­fi­ca­tion and deploy­ment. Gotono­mi, mean­while, brings com­mu­ni­ca­tions equip­ment designed around the size, weight and pow­er con­straints of UAV plat­forms.

“UAV and Advanced Air Mobil­i­ty plat­forms can­not reach their full oper­a­tional poten­tial when con­nec­tiv­i­ty, air­craft inte­gra­tion, cer­ti­fi­ca­tion, and deploy­ment are treat­ed as sep­a­rate chal­lenges,” said Tony Bai­ley, Pres­i­dent and Chief Oper­at­ing Offi­cer of L2 Avi­a­tion. “This part­ner­ship brings those dis­ci­plines togeth­er through a com­plete, air­craft-lev­el solu­tion. Gotonomi’s lead­ing-edge satel­lite com­mu­ni­ca­tions tech­nol­o­gy, Viasat’s Velaris ser­vice, and L2 Aviation’s engi­neer­ing and cer­ti­fi­ca­tion capa­bil­i­ties cre­ate an inte­grat­ed path from sys­tem archi­tec­ture and instal­la­tion through reg­u­la­to­ry approval and oper­a­tional deploy­ment.”
