FAA Announces Hybrid-Electric Flight Demonstrations Linking Small and Major Airports

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has conducted a series of hybrid-electric aircraft demonstration flights aimed at testing connections between smaller regional airports and major airline hubs.

The flights, carried out by Electra in partnership with the Pennsylvania and New Jersey departments of transportation, were conducted under the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). The demonstration connected Manassas, Virginia, with Philadelphia, using a series of stops at regional airports in Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The route included Washington Manassas Airport, Millville Executive Airport, Atlantic City Bader Field, Northeast Philadelphia Airport and Philadelphia International Airport. The exercise was designed to generate operational data on how advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft could connect communities that are not directly served by major airports.

The FAA said information gathered through the demonstrations will be used to identify regulatory and operational gaps and improve procedures for integrating AAM aircraft into the National Airspace System. The agency also sees regional connections as a potential way to improve access to larger metropolitan areas for communities that currently require lengthy ground journeys to reach major airports.

PennDOT’s mission is to help connect people to where they’re going, no matter how they choose to travel. The innovative technology being demonstrated this week has the potential to make air travel more convenient and accessible to our communities. PennDOT is proud to lead this multistate collaborative, working with FAA and our state partners.” — PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll.

This demonstration is a powerful proof point that the next era of aviation is here. Electra’s Ultra Short aircraft can create direct connections between communities, regional airports, and major hubs, unlocking a faster, more accessible way to travel. With the FAA, PennDOT, and NJDOT, we are laying the foundation for Direct Aviation and extending America’s leadership into a new generation of flight.” — Marc Allen, CEO of Electra

The demonstrations are part of a broader federal effort to test advanced aircraft in real-world operating environments. In March 2026, the Department of Transportation selected eight projects spanning 26 states to participate in the eIPP. Pennsylvania is among the participating states, with additional demonstrations planned through the remainder of the year.

Airport infrastructure, airspace procedures, state-level coordination and operational requirements will all need to be addressed before hybrid-electric and other advanced aircraft can enter broader commercial service.

With every new test flight, the Department is gathering more of the data we need to enable the safe rollout of these next-generation aircraft. I’m thrilled to see the continued success of the Trump Administration’s first-ever eVTOL pilot program and look forward to seeing more American innovators revolutionize the way people and products move.” — U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy
